Kitchen maid, Cordelia Brown holds a place of favour in Grey ****s Manor. Apart from her normal duties, she is also companion to Master Thomas, the only son, and heir to the Barrington fortune. Having, been raised together since childhood, they are the closest of friends, and inevitably, become lovers.
Having reached his majority, Thomas is called away to the colours, but before he leaves, he swears to marry Cordelia upon his return and gives her a red ribbon as a token of his love.
The housekeeper, jealous of Cordelia’s favoured position; accuses her of theft when she finds the ribbon hidden in the girl’s bible, Unable to speak of her affair with Thomas, she is imprisoned and sentenced to ‘Death by hanging’. The shock brings her to her time, and her child is still born. By changing identities with another woman who has died of consumption, Cordelia assumes both her identity and her sentence, which is to be ‘Transported for Life’ on the first fleet of prison ships bound for the new colony of Australasia in 1789.
